Southern Company Services As you know, this past May we announced plans to form a new subsidiary -
~
Southern Nuclear Operating Company (SONOPCO) - to provide management and
- a technical services for the nuclear power plants in our system.
I want to briefly update you on the progress we'w made toward combining our l
nuclear operations.
In June, we filed an application with the Securities and Evehaa== Commission for approval to create the new company. We are awaiting final comminion action. Howewr, j
Oglethorpe Power Corporation, which owns 30 percent of Plant Vogtle and 30 percent.
of Plant Hatch, has intervened in the matter and asked the cammieelon to delay its ruling until several of Oglethorpe's concerns are addressed. We are continuing to hold

diraions with Oglethorpe officials.
'We've also taken the first step in merging the nuclear management professionals of Alabama Power and Georgia Power. Pat Mcdonald is serving as executive vice president of both companies and is responsible for the operation of Plants Vogtle, l
Hatch, and 3r.cy. He is being assisted by George Hairston, who is serving as a senior vice presiden; af both companies.
Also, I recently asked Alabama Power President Joe Farley to devote a portion of his time to guiding the fctmation of our new nuclear company. His leadership and insight j
will be of immeasurable value.
l Finally, we have decided to move the off-site nuclear management and support i
functions of both Alnhamn Power and Georgia Power to a single location. While each company - as the licensee - will be responsible for operating its respective plants, i
a common location will better facilitate - ehanee of information and integrated l
nuclear planning.
i We will locate these functicks in Building 40 of the Inverness office park near l
Birmingham - adjacent to the nuclear support and engineering support groups of l
Southern Company Services. This relocation should be completed. by the end of 1988.
As we continue this process, some of you certainly will be called upon to assist in various aspects of SONOPCO's creation. I would ask each of you personally to do all l
you can to help make this exciting promise a reality.
