MEMORANDUM TO The Files PROM H. L. Price, Director of Regulation

SUBJECT:

BODEGA HEAD I just ca13ed Mr. Arthur Daker, Associato Director of the Geolo61 cal Survey, as a follow.up on Acting Chairman O

Wilson's letter to the Secreta *7 which said that I would be in touch nith the Geological Suru/ about additional studies to be nade over an1 above what the Geological Survey has already been a

doing on this project. Mr. Bake? had not yet seen Dr. Wilson s letter to the Secretary. I told him what the letter said and that the reason I wanted to come over and talk to him was that I didn't know what additional work needed to be done by the Geological Survey in addition to the work already under way. He said that time overtook the preparation of the Secretary 8s letter and that what it was talking about was the two weeks work that members of the Geological Survey are already in the process of doing.

I then called Mr. Rettie in Mr. Stoddard's office (after being unable to reach Mr. Stoddard) and told him of my conversation with Mr. Baker. I also told him that we were getting some inquiries about the Secretary's letter, particularly the geolegical aspects, and that we would today release Dr. Wilson's letter to the press. This was entirely agreeable to hi%

,m May 29, 1963 Mr. Baker called me back this morning and caid he had received a copy of Dr. Wilson's letter. He confirmed that the r.eolog.tcal investigation proposed t-' the Secretary o* the Interior did not involve anything in addition co the invest 1Gation which the Survey has been making during the past couple of weeks at the request of our staff. He caid he expected the report would be ready in '. ~>out a week.
