3ma UNITED STATES GOVEuMENT Memorandum 10 Files DATE:

February 26, 1964 Clif ford K. Bec IROM : Deputy Director of Regulation

SUBJECT:

SEIS10 LOGY ON MALIBU

.[0 ~.1. I Y ne U.S. Geological Survey has written a draf t report, too detailed; does not clearly identify issues as understood from oral discussions; does not cover all issues; does not cover observations of scme excavations and cuta on the site. A revision has been made of the draf t report (info. Wilmarth to Beck, Feb. 18), but no one had seen it.

Wilmarth agreed to discuss it before sending it.

A report is needed from the Geological Survey on:

1.

We geologic evidence for seismic history and status.

2.

The status of earthquake faulting in the area 3.

The soil stress transmission characteristics in case of earthquake shocks.

4.

The area, extent, and implications of potential landslides.

5.

Other earth foundation problems for the facility 6.

Flooding possibilities 7.

Ground water levels, movement; soil retention characteristics for containments.

A due date for the report is not now inninent, but should be aimed for about The Coast and Geodetic Survey si.ould prepare a draft report on:

1.

Earthquake history in the Halibu area 2.

Location, age, activity of fault zones near Malibu 3.

We likelihood and magnitude of future faulting at the l

proposed site.

4 The probable and likely upper limits of ground motion in future earthquakes. Ground secelerations and vibration spectra should be considered.
