Pier KC11 Drift: The drift layback areas were backfilled with grout and i
I the required drift support modifications were completed.
Pier KC11 Drift: The pier excavation and lagging were installed to a depth j
of 10 ft. No groundwater entered the excavation.
Pier E8: The bell reinforcement and concrete'were installed. Shaft reinforcement installation was initiated.
Pier E6 Drift: The slope layback at the west end of the drift was backfilled with-grout.
Pier E10: Reinforcement and instrumentation installatio'n were completed in
- the. shaft and the shaft concrete was placed.
Piers E9,111 and 12 - These piers were jacked to 110 ogreent of the specified
-load and the wedges checked for tightness. At pier E9 the wedges loosened so that rejacking was required.
Pier KC2 Drift: The drift layback areas were backfilled with grout and the' necessary drift support modifications were completed.
Pier V8: The bell excavation was near completion and steel plates and strut ~
supports were installed.
Pier W10: 'The bell reinforoceent and concrete were installed.
9 p
- Piers W9, 11 and 12 Piers W9 and W11 were cheoked.to verify tightness of i-the wedges under the required jack load. ' Pier W12 was subjected to routine l,-
rejacking to satisfy the deflection limitation criteria.

Consumers Power Bechtel MPQAD Stone & Webster D. Puhalla J. Fisher G. Carpenter W. Kilker J. Schaub M. Blendy A. Scott J. Gaydos Parsons N. Swanberg J. Ratner i
Purpose This meeting is held each day to discuss items regarding the Independent Soils Assessment at the Midland Plant, Units 1 & 2.
Discussion Item 1 - Ccnstruction Aid Procedure, h
M. Blendy explained that MPQAD is expected to soon sign the procedure that will allow resident engineering to design and implement specific Construction Aids without having to include the items on the formal project drawings.
I
/'
Item 1 - Grouting of Existing Slope Laybacks.
~
l J. Fisher reported that existing laybacks in the drifts to piers KC2, KC11 j
and at the ends of piers E/W8.were completely grouted as of May 31, 1983 PM.
J. Schaub reported that fulfillment of this activity along with processing the excavation permit should release the E/W8 bulkhead work by the NRC.
' Item 3 - Status of NIRS #6-8.
j N. Swanberg and W. Kilker reported that agreement had been reached on NIRs
- 6 and 7.
With respect NIR #6, the construction procedure on backpacking will be modified to reflect an emphasis on using the maximum size spacer presently allowable as per the specification. NIR #7 will be closed based on the commitment to use a coarser grained backpacking material in areas of seepage.
The project engineering response to NIR #8 has been discussed with the Assessment Team and a resolution is expected shortly.
Item 4 - Fox-Howlett Coupler Inspection.
J.. Fisher stated that in order to comply with ASME requirements l'out of every 100 Fox-Howlett Couplers on pier E10 will be disassembled and inspected..
Item 5 - Fabrication Status.
In reply to a question by W. Kilker, J. Fisher stated that virtually all
-materials necessary to complete piers E/W8, E/W10 and KC2/KC11 have been fabricated. The resolution on a few outstanding' items is -shortly expected.
Item 6 - U.S. Testing Aadit Observations and Findings.
()
J. Fisher reported that the preliminary responses to'the audit findings are due out today and the final resolution is. expected by June 3

Item 7 - Use of Dry-Pack.
J. Fisher and J. Schaub explained that there have been recent discussion on the use of dry-pack versus pressure grout in the installation of the upper bearing plates for the permanent underpinning piers. There are still i
concerns over the advisability of switching to a pressure grout for the uoper plate.
W. Kilker said the Assessment Team will not become involved in the decision making process. However, the Team's assessment of the dry-packing done to date by the Underpinning Subcontractor is that the product
?
has been consistently of very good and imiform quality and the chred material fully met the bearing requirements.
