SUBJECT:

REVIEW SCHEDULE FOR MIDLAND VESSEL HOLDDOWN MODIFICATIONS I

The attached letter from Consumers Power Company of July 24, 1930 forwards a I

proposed modification on the reactor vessel support design for Midland Plant, Unit 1.

(For Unit 2, no finn decision has been made_to date_by_.C_onsumers but their present plans call for installation of _identij:al modifications,]

pending final confirmatory analyses of Unit 1.) The present report inc15 des-the design allowable bolt stresses and other design criteria and proposes an HRC review schedule.

The proposed schedule in the report (See Table 1 therein) includes review of ~

a final report describing final design loads and detailed analytical techd niques which Consumers is to submit by October 1980. We anticipate meetings and requests for information shortly after receipt of the October report.

r I&E has indicated to Consumers that construction activities for the proposed i

nodification should not proceed until URR concurrence has been obtained.

Consumers latest possible date fnr obtaining NRC concurrence without impact-l ing their scheduled fuel load date is December 1980.

We request that you include support for this area in your present planning efforts.
