Certification No. P 384-424-119 TATE OF RHODE ISLAND AND PROVIDENCE PLANTATIONS RHODE ISLAND ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION Nuclear Science Center South Ferry Road Narragansett, R.I. 02882-1197

'- June 28, 1984 U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Region 1 931 Park Avenue King of Prussia, PA 19406 License R-95 Docket 50-193 Gentlemen:

.' 7his letter will confirm a telephone report made to T. Shedlosky at

,f c 9:40 a.m. on June 18, 1984 concerning a failure in our propane driven

!'2 standby power system during its routine weekly test.

Dn June 28, 1984, after successfully starting and operating normally, nl .the standby power system shut off and would not restart. During n' . troubleshooting it became obvious that the solenoid valve which con-

[, ,trols the flow of fuel was not receiving the required voltage. The

, pause was found to be a wire which had pulled loose from its connec-Ltion. The connection was repaired and the generator started normally.

All other similar connections were checked for defects.

The reactor which had been operating at full power was shut down at the time of failure. Restart of the reactor began after correction of the problem at 9:16 a.m.

There wer,e no consequences at the facility.

Very truly yours, g , .
