RHODE ISLAND ATON11C ENERGY COMN11SSION Nuclear Science Center South Ferry RoaJ Narragansett, R. 1.02882 May 17, 1983 U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Standardization & Special Property Branc.h Division of Licensing Washington, D. C. 20555 Attention:

Mr. Harold Bernard License R-95, Docket 50-193 Gentlemen:

On Monday May 16, 1983, we discovered a seepage of reactor pool water from an area below the thermal column case.

The water ap-pears te be seeping from a horizontal construction joint in the concrete biological shield. A rough estimate of the volume is 3

160 cm /hr.

The mass of concrete in this section of the reactor pool wall /

shield contains conwiderable embedded piping for coolant lines, anti-siphon lines, demineralizer line and chemical additive lines.

We are planning and carrying out procedures to attempt to isolate the leak.

The technical specifications for this reactor do not specify a pool leak rate.

It is, therefore, not clear that this situation is re-portable.

Very truly yours,

[%C,
