)
Dear Mr. McCabe:
This letter will confirm a telephone report made to Mr. Ebe McCabe at 10:20 a.m. on Thursday, May 12, 1988 concerning a failure in the standby power system (generator) .
At 0800 hours0.00926 days
0.222 hours
0.00132 weeks
3.044e-4 months
on May 12 the standby power system was started in crder to perform the weekly test of the system. At the same time a checkout and startup of the reactor began. The reactor reached full power of 2 MW at 0856 hours0.00991 days
0.238 hours
0.00142 weeks
3.25708e-4 months
.
It was intended that the generator would operate under test conditions for about one hour after which the generator would be returned to standby.
At about 0925 hours0.0107 days
0.257 hours
0.00153 weeks
3.519625e-4 months
it was discovered that the generator had shut itself off. As required by the technical specifications, the reactor was shut down. We believe ba3ed on indirect evidence that the generator may have turned itself off at about 0835 hours0.00966 days
0.232 hours
0.00138 weeks
3.177175e-4 months
.
The generator restarted with no difficulty. Repeated stopping and starting of the generator was performed with no difficulty. In addition, the generator ran for approximate?-
another two hours with no difficulty a:.d with normal characteristics.

Mr. Ebe McCabe, Chief May 12, 1988 Page 2 During this generator failure there was no concurrent electric company power failure and there were no circumstances requiring standby power.
Very truly yours,
