20555 Attention:

Mr. R. A. Clark, Chief Operating Reactor, Branch 3 Gentlemen:

DOCKETS 50-266 AND 50-301 APPENDIX R EXEMPTION REQUESTS POINT BEACH NUCLEAR PLANT, UNITS 1 AND 2 By letter dated April 28, 1983 and enclosure thereto, Wisconsin Electric Power Company submitted a revised description of modifications proposed for Point Beach Nuclear Plant including the provision of alternate shutdown capability for certain fire areas and fire zones.

Our April 28 letter stated that a detailed description of alternate shutdown capability would be submitted by October 27, 1983.

The Staff's requirements for information to be-included in the alternate shutdown capability submittal were discussed at a July 22, 1983 meeting in Bethesda.

(

To assure that information related to alternate shutdown capability is complete and that the Staff is kept current with our proposed modifications, we suggest that periodic progress meetings be held with the Staff as our evaluation proceeds.

We propose that the first progress meeting be scheduled for August 26.

At that meeting we would expect to present the approach and methodology for providing alternate indication for instruments which the Staff considers to be necessary for alternate shutdown.

The subject of instrumentation has been selected on the basis that it is an alternate shutdown item common to several fire zones in the plant.

We would also be prepared to-discuss any questions the Staff may have regarding.our overall approach to alternate shutdown and the status of our evaluations.
