S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION Washington, D. C.

20555 Attention:

Mr. R. A. Clark, Chief Operating Reactors Branch 3 Gentlemen:

DOCKETS 50-266 AND 50-301 APPENDIX R EXEMPTION REQUESTS POINT BEACH NUCLEAR PLANT, UNITS 1 AND 2 By letter dated April 28, 1983 and enclosure thereto, Wisconsin Electric Power Company submitted a revised scope of requested Appendix R fire protection exemptions and included a revised description of proposed plant modifications.

As a result of subsequent telephone discussions with the NRR staff, we believe that further clarification of the modifications proposed for the Point Beach auxiliary building would be helpful.

The following itemized clarification of the enclosure to our April 28 letter is therefore provided:

Page 8, Item 7.1, Fire Zone 1 The proposed automatic fire suppression system for this fire zone will include specific coverage of the open archways to Fire Zone 2 on the north side and to the HVAC room on the south side, as well as providing coverage over the doorways to the charging pump cubicles.

Additionally, fire stops will be installed in cable trays routed in the east-west direction which constitute intervening combustibles between redundant charging pump cables.

This provision will restrict the propagation of a potential fire and enhance the separation of redundant cables.
