Mr. A.

Schwencer, Chief Operating Reactors Branch 1 Gentlemen:

DOCKET NOS. 50-266 AND 50-301 FIRE PROTECTION MODIFICATIONS POINT BEACH NUCLEAR PLANT, UNITS 1 AND 2 Your letter of March 5, 1980, which we received on March 24, 1980, discussed the status of your review of the Point Beach Nuclear Plant fire protection program.

As you know, the review of the Point Beach fire protection program has been extended beyond the period of time initially contemplated.

We have enclosed as Attachment 1 to this letter a revision to the listing of those items for which Staff review is incomplete and those items for which we are to provide additional information.

This revised list includes the dates by which we expect to submit additional information as we proceed with our design and procurement effort. to your March 5, 1980, letter stated, "it has not been shown that the detectors used at Point Beach will have adequate sensitivity to the products of combustion for the combustibles in the areas where installed".

We understand that manufacturers can new furnish certification regarding the sensitivity of their detectors to specific combustibles.

We are presently soliciting proposals for the Point Beach fire protection system.

We will request the appropriate certification for the detectors from the supplier selected for Point Beach.

We will provide the specific certification for calibration methods upon receipt from the detector manufacturer.

Please advise us if you have any additional questions about our fire protection modifications.

Very truly yours, Q
