Enclosure 6 HEMORANDUM FOR: File February 12, 1990 1

SUBJECT:
NMLS MONTHLY STATUS REPORT FOR JANUARY,1990 Licensing statistics for the month are attached.
Vivian attended a one week course at Chattanooga on internal dosimetry and whole body counting. Jack and I attended a one day class on DOS.
Billie and I attended a one day class on Wor.d Perfect. Jack and I attended the Region IV annual radiation protection refresher class.
On January 17, I participated with Glenda Jackson in a public meeting on the proposed revision to 10 CFR 170. The meeting had been announced by Region IV press release on January 2. Because of the short notice, we had mailed a copy of the press release to all Region IV medical, gauge, radiography, and well logger licensees on January 9. Despite this effort, the meeting was attended by only 5 well loggers and one gauge user. Topics discussed included not only the proposed fee increases but also the inspection program and I
decommissioning. On January 23, Bill Stowe, who had represented Southwestern Laboratories at the public meeting, came to the Region IV office to discuss further the decommissioning rule as it applies to his company.
From a licensing standpoint, the month went well. We completed 53 licensing actions and wrote 10 deficiency letters. At the end of January, the projected completions for the year were 531, compared to an NMSS goal of 315. In accomplishing this, however, we did not gain on our renewal backlog (67) and we lost a little ground in terms of the age of our casework.
(Specifically, the ef f ective backlog for news and amendments increased f rom 2 to 4'and the effective backlog for renewals increased from 30 to 32.)
Considering that the renewal backlog has been reduced in FY90 from 87 to 67, NHLS is making good progress in handling'the current program while completing the old renewal cases returned by NMSS to the Region last year.
