Areas Inspected: Routine inspection by the IE Regional Resident Inspector (RI) of safety-related construction activities including protection of the reactor vessel and other components of the nuclear steam system supplier (NSSS); material lay down and storage areas including the warehouse; welding of safety-related piping systems; electrical work and mechanical work associated with the Ultimate Heat sink Cooling Tower. This in-spection involved a total of 50 inspector hours onsite by one NRC inspec-tor including 0 iaspector hours onsite during off-shifts.

Results. No items of noncompliance or deviations were identified.

Plant Tours one or more plant areas were toured several times during the re-porting period to observe general construction practices; area cleanliness and storage condition of equipment, piping, and elec-trical cable.

(3) Essential Service Water System Welds 2EF 04 FW50 For each of these welds one or more of the following fabrication activities was observed. Handling and protection of piping and

partially completed welds was satisfactory.

Purge gas was correctly used. The weld area was free of any grease or particles. The joint fit-up dimensions were within procedural requirements and the welders were. certified as qualified for the procedure specified to be used for welding the pipe joint.

No items of noncompliance or deviations were identified.

Nuclear Steam System Supplier (NSSS) Equipment The inspector observed the inplace storage and protection of NSSS components and piping. Tne piping assemblies, reactor vessel internals, and reactor vessel head was properly stored and protected.

Storage and warehousing of Safety Related Material and Components Material and component storage areas were observed. The warehouse

Ultimate Heat Sink Cooling Tower Fill Material Bechtel Specification 10884-M-015 identifies the type and quantity of fill material that is to be used to provide water dispersion area in the Ultimate Heat Sink. During the report period the inspector reviewed the installation and quality control process used during installation of the material. The material crosspack corrugated asbestos is installed without mortar on a neoprene cushion. Among other things the Quality Control Inspectors were verifying that the material installed: (1) is not damaged; (2) is correct material; (3) is installed correctly and; (4) the number of sheets is correct.

No items of noncompliance or deviations were identified.

.The inspector met with Licensee representatives (denoted under Persons Contacted) on February 6 and 27, 1981, and other. occasions throughout the month.
