December 18, 1979 Region I United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Off ice of Inspection and Enforcement 631 Park Avenue King of Prussia, Pennsylvania 19406 Gentlemen:

SALEM NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION, UNIT NO. 1 NON-ROUTINE ENVIRONMENTAL OPERATING REPORT DOCKET NO. 50-272 This report has been prepared in response to Section 5.6.2.1 of Appendix B - Environment Technical Specification (ETS) of the Salem Nucl.ear Generating Station Operating License DPR-70 which requires that a report be submitted to the Commission in "the event that *** an unusual or important event occurs that *** has high public or potential public interest concern-ing environmental impact from plant operation." During the course of normal monitoring, as part of the biological/eco-logical studies, an Atlantic loggerhead sea turtle was captured and released.

Atlantic Loggerhead Turtle During our normal river trawling survey of the Delaware River in the vicinity of Artificial Island, our consultant, Ichthyological Associates, captured and released unharmed an Atlantic loggerhead (Caretta caretta) sea turtle. The Atlantic loggerhead is listed as threatened by the Department of the Interior and as endangered by the New Jersey Depart-ment of Environmental Protection.

The turtle was captured during a ten minute bottom trawl at 8:40 a.m. on August 23, 1979. It was captured in Trawl Zone R315, at approximately river mile 15 in the center of the Delaware Bay. The Salem Station is located at approximately river mile 50. The water was 16 to 19 feet deep, with a temperature of 220 C at the bottom and surface, 29 ppt salinity at surface, and had a Secchi disk reading of 42 inches. This was the only Atlantic loggerhead ever captured during the 11 year environmental monitoring program conducted for the Salem Station.
