CONFIRMATORY LETTER REGARDING THE INOPERABILITY OF SALEM STATION FIRE PUMPS DOCKET NOS. 50-272 AND 50-311 No. 1 Fire Pump was declared inoperable on April 23, 1992, and remains inoperable due to a broken crankshaft. Repairs to the crankshaft are being performed at the manufac.turer' s facility.

On May 15, 1992, during performance of a surveillance test the No~ 2 Fire Pump was declared inoperable due to a s~vere oil leak.

Accordingly, consistent with the Salem Units 1 and 2 Technical

.specification requirements (3.7.10.1 Action b), with both fire

-suppression systems inoperable, PSE&G established a back up fire suppression system and reported the event to Nuclear Regulatory Commission in accordance with the requirements of the Emergency Classification Guide Section.18 initiating condition R.

Pursuant to the requirements of Salem Technical Specification 3.7.10.1 Action b, PSE&G hereby submits this confirmatory letter documenting the Fire Pumps inoperability. Additionally, in accordance with Salem Technical Specification requirements, a written report will be provided to the Commission within 14 days of the event outlining the cause of the inoperability, the corrective actions taken, and a schedule for restoring the system
