Marine Turtle Removal Monthly Summary November 2014

Dear Meghan,

Attached, please find the monthly summary of marine turtle removals for November 2014. This month, we captured thirteen (13) Caretta caretta and eleven (11) Chelonia mydas in the intake canal of the St. Lucie power plant on Hutchinson Island. Two sea turtles were sent for rehabilitation and there were no mortalities for the month of November. As with all sea turtle strandings at the Saint Lucie Plant (alive or dead), the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) was consulted and a stranding form was filed with the state through the Sea Turtle Stranding and Salvage Network. Neither of the stranding incidents in November were considered causal to power plant operations.

There were two non-causal stranding events this past month. On November 11th, a juvenile loggerhead was captured in the tangle nets with an apparent boat strike injury. The turtle had propeller damage to the right anterior carapace that extended through to the plastron. Inwater Research Group (IRG) personnel transported the turtle to the Loggerhead Marinelife Center (LMC) in Juno Beach for rehabilitation. On November 13th, a juvenile green turtle was dip-netted that had been attacked by a shark. There was a large arc-shaped bite mark across the carapace with the body cavity exposed in the upper right quadrant. This turtle was picked up by a volunteer and taken back to LMC for rehabilitation.

Throughout the month, the 5-inch barrier net experienced severe loads of jellyfish that entered into the intake canal system, whereas algae entrainment was moderate. Inwater Research Group biologists performed around-the-clock monitoring of the intake canal and barrier net system when jellyfish intrusion was severe. On November 25th, Underwater Engineering Services cleaned the temporary 5-inch barrier net of accumulated biota and debris. Through these combined efforts, the temporary barrier net was maintained well above the waterline and no turtles were observed beyond the 5-inch net. Construction of a permanent 5-inch barrier net is currently underway and completion has been projected for early 2015.

The tag numbers and morphometric data for all turtles captured during the month have been included with this report (see attachments/addendums). Also included is a spreadsheet for all captures, mortalities, injuries, and causal events delineated by species and by month for the year 2014. In addition, this spreadsheet also tracks fresh scrapes incurred on captured turtles for the current month, as well as the entire year. An additional Excel spreadsheet tracks all causal injuries and mortalities incurred by sea turtles at the St. Lucie Plant since 2002.
