Marine Turtle Removal Monthly Summary October 2022

Dear Meghan,

Attached, please find the monthly summary of marine turtle removals for October 2022. This month we captured ten Caretta caretta and 18 Chelonia mydas in the intake canal of the St. Lucie power plant on Hutchinson Island. There were no mortalities or sea turtles sent for rehabilitation this month.

Two turtles were recovered beyond the 5-inch primary barrier net this month. On October 10th, a small juvenile green turtle was removed from the power plant intake wells. This turtle was in good condition and was promptly released following a routine health assessment and workup (measurements and tags applied). Then, on October 14th, a second juvenile green turtle was found swimming just behind the 5-inch net. Inwater Research Group biologists were able to dip-net this turtle between the primary and secondary barrier nets later that same day.

The primary 5-inch barrier net encountered light-to-moderate amounts of algae in October. Following the discovery of two turtles beyond the primary barrier net, Underwater Engineering Services divers inspected the 5-inch net and no holes were found. Both turtles were smaller juvenile greens and likely made it past the primary barrier net during Hurricane Ian.

The tag numbers and morphometric data for all turtles captured during the month have been included with this report (see attachments/addendums). Also included is a spreadsheet for all captures, mortalities, injuries, and causal events delineated by species and by month for 2022. In addition, this spreadsheet tracks fresh scrapes incurred on captured turtles for the current month, as well as the entire year.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Sincerely, Steve Steve Weege Sr. Environmental Specialist Inwater Research Group, Inc.
