20555 Gentlemen:

Subject:

Docket No. 50-206 Post-Accident Sampling System San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Unit 1

References:

1) December 27, 1983 letter from M. 0. Medford, SCE, to D. M. Crutchfield, NRC, regarding Post-Accident Sampling Capability
2) November 7, 1985 letter from J. A. Zwolinski, NRC, to K. P. Baskin, SCE, regarding Post-Accident Sampling System Reference 1 provided you with additional information pursuant to your post-implementation review of the subject topic for San Onofre Unit 1.

Specifically, it indicated Chemistry Technician retraining on the Post-Accident Sampling System (PASS) would be extended from a six month frequency to twelve months. The retraining frequency of twelve months, in addition to the operation of the PASS during routine system surveillance provides an adequate opportunity for demonstrating system and operator reliability. Subsequently, the NRC staff's Safety Evaluation, provided by Reference 2, indicated a retraining frequency of once every six months. In light of Reference 1, please review your Safety Evaluation to determine the acceptability of a twelve month retraining frequency. The current program at San Onofre for retraining Chemistry Technicians on the PASS is twelve months.

If you have any questions or require additional information in this regard, please let me know.
