Mr. 3. A. Zwolinski, Chief Operating Reactors Branch No. 5 Division of Licensing U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C.

20555 Gentlemen:

Subject:

Docket No. 50-206 NUREG-0737, Item II.B.3, Post-Accident Sampling Capability San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Unit 1

Reference:

Letter, M. 0. Medford, SCE, to W. A. Paulson, NRC, Post-Accident Sampling Capability, August 14, 1984 The referenced letter provided you with our schedule for the completion of the Post-Accident Sampling System (PASS) installation at San Onofre Unit 1 by June 14, 1985. The referenced letter also provided the justification for a delay in the implementation of the PASS and the justification for the issuance of Amendment No. 85, dated November 23, 1984, incorporating License Condition 3.K, "Post-Accident Sampling System (PASS),

NUREG-0737, Item II.B.3" into Provisional Operating License No. DPR-13.

License Condition 3.K requires that the PASS be installed at San Onofre Unit 1 by the startup from the Cycle IX refueling outage or July 1, 1986, whichever is earlier. Notwithstanding the implementation date relief granted by Amendment 85, the referenced letter indicated that we would notify you of any impact on the schedule provided therein. Several recent events and engineering evolutions have delayed the schedule for completion of the PASS.

Therefore, it is the purpose of this letter to provide you with a revised and accurate projection of the completion schedule for the PASS.

The revised schedule for the completion of the PASS is shown in the Enclosure to this letter. The revised schedule shows completion of the PASS turnover to Station personnel just prior to the Cycle IX refueling outage, 850620()35 850618 PDR ADOCK 05000206 P

~

PDR June 18, 1985 which is consistent with License Condition 3.K. Although the completion dates are given for each activity to complete the PASS, it should be noted that many of these activities are initiated and worked on, in parallel efforts.

If you have any question regarding the revised schedule, please let me know.

Very truly you Enclosure cc:

J. B. Martin, Regional Administrator, NRC Region V F. R. Huey, USNRC Senior Resident Inspector, Units 1,2 and 3
