Marine Turtle Removal Monthly Summary May 2013

Dear Meghan,

Attached, please find the monthly summary of marine turtle removals for May 2013. This month, we captured forty-seven (47) Caretta caretta, thirty-one (31) Chelonia mydas and one (1) Eretmochelys imbricata in the intake canal of the St. Lucie power plant on Hutchinson Island. One sea turtle was sent for rehabilitation and there was one mortality during the month of May.

On the morning of May 17th, a subadult loggerhead sea turtle was recovered from the temporary 5-inch barrier net. The animal was emaciated and lethargic with heavy epibiont coverage. No other wounds or abnormalities were noted. After consultation with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), this incident was deemed non-causal to power plant operations. The FWC stranding coordinator transferred the turtle to the Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach for rehabilitation.

On May 18th, the skeletal remains of a subadult loggerhead were found on the bottom of the intake canal during a snorkel survey. The skull was recovered for identification and documentation purposes. The cause of death could not be determined; however, the animal was most likely entrained postmortem. After consultation with FWC, this incident was deemed non-causal to power plant operations.

Throughout the month, the 5-inch barrier net experienced severe loads of algae that entered into the intake canal system; whereas jellyfish entrainment was moderate. The severe algae event began on May 30th and lasted through the end of the month. Inwater Research Group biologists began 24 hour2.777778e-4 days
0.00667 hours
3.968254e-5 weeks
9.132e-6 months
canal surveillance and algae monitoring on May 31st. Also at that time, Underwater Engineering Services deployed divers to clean and monitor the temporary 5-inch barrier net around the clock. Although two support straps on the buoys holding up the temporary barrier net broke during the algae event, the net was never submerged below the waterline.

Overall, the temporary barrier net has performed as designed and no turtles have been observed beyond the 5-inch net. To date, Florida Power & Light continues to work towards the installation of a permanent 5-inch barrier net.

The tag numbers and morphometric data for all turtles captured during the month have been included (see attachments/addendums). Also included is a spreadsheet for all captures, mortalities, injuries, and causal events delineated by species and by month for the year 2013. In addition, this spreadsheet also tracks fresh scrapes 1

incurred on captured turtles for the current month, as well as the entire year. An additional Excel spreadsheet was added this year that tracks all causal injuries and mortalities incurred by sea turtles at the St. Lucie Plant since 2001.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Sincerely, Steve Steve Weege Sr. Environmental Specialist Inwater Research Group, Inc.
