SCHEDULE REVISION FOR THE ENVIRONMENTAL REVIEW OF THE DAVIS-BESSE NUCLEAR POWER STATION, UNIT NO.1, LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION (TAC NO. ME4613)
Dear Mr. Allen:
By letter dated August 27,2010, FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company (FENOC) submitted an application pursuant to Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR) Part 51 and 10 CFR Part 54, to renew Operating License NPF-003 for the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station, Unit 1 (Davis-Besse), for review by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC or the staff).
On January 13, 2012, FENOC made the NRC aware of recent errors discovered within the Davis-Besse Environmental Report. The discovered errors are part of the Severe Accident Mitigation Alternative (SAMA) analysis. FENOC also indicated the revised SAMA analysis will be submitted to the NRC no sooner than March 31,2012. As a result ofthis information, the NRC will revise the current schedule to indicate the future milestone dates for the environmental review as to be determined (TBD). Upon receipt and review of the SAMA analysis, the NRC will determine the impact to the license renewal environmental review, and in turn the final license renewal decision, and issue a revised schedule letter. Additionally, the NRC will continue to assess the license renewal safety review in conjunction with the environmental review before making a determination as to the impact to the timeline for the final license renewal decision.
Enclosed is the staff's revised environmental review schedule for the Davis-Besse license renewal application (LRA). The NRC will continue to follow established review procedures and the enclosed schedule to complete the reviews required by 10 CFR Parts 54 and 51.
