SCHEDULE REVISION FOR THE ENVIRONMENTAL AND SAFETY REVIEW OF THE DAVIS-BESSE NUCLEAR POWER STATION LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION (TAC NOs. ME4613 AND ME4640)
Dear Mr. Lieb:
By letter dated August 27,2010, FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company (FENOC) submitted an application pursuant to Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR) Part 51 and 10 CFR Part 54, to renew operating license NPF-003 for the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station, Unit 1 (Davis-Besse), for review by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff. This letter is to inform you of a change in the environmental and safety review schedule for the Davis-Besse license renewal review.
Enclosed is the NRC staff's revised environmental and safety review schedule for the Davis-Besse license renewal application. The schedule has been updated to reflect changes in the date of the issuance of the draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (SEIS),
issuance of the Safety Evaluation Report, and completion of subsequent environmental and safety review milestones. The environmental schedule is being revised because the NRC staff requires the additional time to allow for the internal review of additional items related to the SEIS in a manner which balances the internal workload across numerous ongoing reviews. The safety schedule is being revised because the NRC staff requires additional time to complete its review of the Davis-Besse reactor vessel internals aging management program and the associated implementation of the "Materials Reliability Program: Pressurized Water Reactor Internals Inspection and Evaluation Guidelines (MRP-227-A)."
We would like to emphasize that the NRC staff will make every effort to meet the revised schedule milestones. The NRC will continue to follow established review procedures and the enclosed review schedule to complete the reviews required by 10 CFR Parts 51 and 54.
