Attached, please find the monthly summary of marine turtle removals for January 2010. In January, we captured twenty eight (28) Caretta caretta, one hundred and twenty three (123) Chelonia mydas, one Dermochelys coriacea, and one Lepidochelys kempii at the intake canal of the St. Lucie power plant on Hutchinson Island. During the month, Florida experienced an unusually long spell of cold weather which had a significant impact on sea turtles. Seventy of our one hundred and fifty three turtles captured were found to be cold stunned due to a very rapid drop in the air and water temperature. The majority of these turtles were transported further south and released into warmer waters.

During the month there were a total of nine turtles that were transported to rehabilitation facilities. On January 4, five juvenile green turtles were found cold stunned at or near the surface of the temporary 5 diameter mesh barrier net as a result of very cold water temperatures. After consultation with FWCC personnel all of these turtles were transported to Gumbo Limbo Nature Center to be released into warmer waters. This event was considered non-causal to power plant operation. On January 6, a juvenile loggerhead turtle was found in poor condition with carapace damage that had exposed bones along the vertebral ridge. This turtle was transported by FWCC personnel to Gumbo Limbo Nature Center and was non-causal to power plant operation.

On the same day, a juvenile green turtle was found cold stunned and in poor condition at the surface of the 5 mesh barrier net. A large, healing slice wound was found along the posterior carapace on the right side and papillomas were also present. This turtle was transported by FWCC personnel to the Marathon Turtle Hospital. This event was considered non-causal to power plant operation. On January 10, a juvenile green turtle was removed from the Unit 2 intake well of the power plant in fair condition and possibly cold stunned.

As a precautionary measure due to the cold water temperatures in the area, the turtle was transported to the Marinelife Center by Inwater Research Group (IRG) biologists and was considered non-causal to power plant operation. On January 18, a juvenile green turtle was found cold stunned and in poor condition (numerous papillomas) at the surface of the 5 barrier net. After consultation with FWCC, this turtle was transported to the Marinelife Center and was not causal to power plant operation.

During the month there were three mortalities that were reported in the intake canal. On January 5, a severely decomposed sub-adult loggerhead turtle was found below the surface of the 5 mesh barrier net. Only the carapace and a few of the vertebral bones were found. This event was considered non-causal to power plant operation. On January 18, a juvenile green turtle was removed from below the surface of the barrier net. This turtle was found to be underweight with no wounds or abnormalities and had most likely succumbed to cold water temperatures from the recent cold stunning event. The turtle was transported to the Marinelife Center by IRG biologists for a necropsy and this event, at this time is considered non-causal to power plant operation.

On January 27, a juvenile green turtle was found at the surface of the barrier net. This turtle was found to be underweight and had been entangled with monofilament around both front flippers. Large multi-lobed papillomas were present on the ventral surface of both rear flippers. This turtle was transported by IRG biologists to the Marinelife Center for necropsy and at this time this mortality is considered not causal to power plant operation.

Throughout the month of January the temporary 5 mesh barrier net experienced light loads of algae that entered into the intake canal. This temporary barrier has effectively kept turtles from moving further down the canal. A total of four green turtles had been removed from the power plants intake wells during the month.

Inwater Research Group biologists repaired a hole at the surface of the net on January 10 and on January 11; 1

divers were deployed to inspect the entire net and had repaired one hole that was found near the bottom on the south end. A permanent fix to the primary net continues to remain in the design phase.

Tag numbers and morphometric data for all turtles are attached. Also, attached is a spreadsheet of all captures, mortalities, injuries and causal events delineated by species and month/year to date for 2010. This spreadsheet also includes and tracks fresh scrapes incurred on captured turtles for the month of January which includes totals and percentage.
