POINT BEACH NUCLEAR PLANT, UNITS 1 AND 2 - REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FROM CSGB BRANCH RELATED TO LICENSE AMENDMENT REQUEST NO. 241 ALTERNATE SOURCE TERM (TAC NOS. ME0219 AND ME0220)

Dear Mr. Meyer:

By letter to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) dated December 8, 2008, as supplemented by letters dated January 16 and 27, 2009, and February 20,2009 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML083450683, ML090160571, ML090280348, and ML090540860, respectively), FPL Energy Point Beach, LLC, submitted a request to revise the current licensing basis to implement the alternate source term through reanalysis of the radiological consequences of the Final Safety Analysis Report Chapter 14 accidents.

The NRC staff is reviewing your submittal and has determined that additional information is required to complete the review. The specific information requested is addressed in the enclosure to this letter. During a discussion with your staff on March 18, 2009, it was agreed that you would provide the additional information within 30 days of the date of this letter.

The NRC staff considers that timely responses to requests for additional information help ensure sufficient time is available for staff review and contribute toward the NRC's goal of efficient and effective use of staff resources. If circumstances result in the need to revise the requested response date, please contact me at (301) 415-2048.

REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ALTERNATE SOURCE TERM SUMP PH POINT BEACH NUCLEAR POWER PLANT, UNITS 1 AND 2 DOCKET NOS. 50-266 AND 50-301

1. Please provide the minimum and maximum times required for the completion of the NaOH addition from the spray additive tank. Also please clarify if the long term analysis of the pH on page 7 of the letter dated January 16, 2009, bounds the 30 day post-LOCA pH value.
2. Please explain the discrepancy in the parameter values on page 3 and page 6 from letter dated January 16, 2009. For example, the volume of the water in the sump, the boron concentration, and the NaOH concentration have different values in the two tables.
