Status for Vermont Yankee biota issues Today, NMFS faxed us their letter responding to our request dated May 5. Nathan and I read it and concluded that we will have to do an essential fish habitat assessment for the Atlantic salmon only. We believe the assessment will not be complicated. NMF has indicated that no further consultation will be needed for ESA; only ESA species was shortnose sturgeon and they do not get past the dam at Turner Falls.
We already have letter dated August 10 from FWS saying no biological assessment is needed for VY license renewal; only ESA species discussed in letter is bald eagle. They told me over the phone that this letter covers both of our requests - original letter dated May 5 and revised letter dated July 21with transmission line ROWs. Therefore, Nathan and I concluded that we do not need to write biological assessment, just address American shad, sea lamprey, and bald eagle in SEIS.
