Intent to Apply for Renewal of Operating License in this letter, Omaha Public Power District (OPPD) is providing formal notification to the NRC of our plans relative to renewal of the Operating License DPR-40 for Fort Calhoun Station (FCS)

Unit No.1. OPPD is cunently exploring all aspects of license renewal, and preliminary evaluations suggest that license renewalis in the best interests of the company.

Contingent on a final OPPD Board of Directors decision to proceed with the license renewal process, OPPD plans to submit by the end of 2002 an application for renewal of the FCS operating license. If the FCS operating license is renewed, OPPD plans to submit (on a date to be determined) a separate Application for Amendment of Operating License, which will convert  ;

the current FCS Technical Specifications to be consistent with NUREG-1432, improved l Standard Technical Specifications for Combustion Engineering Plants.

l None of the aforementioned plans are considered to be regulatory commitments. OPPD will [ ,,
