FOLLOWUP INSPECTION - FORT CALHOUN STATION

Dear Mr. Gambhir:

During our review of Fort Calhoun Station's June 14,1999, performance indicator submittal, we noted that the Drill / Exercise Performance indicator had entered he white band. This indicated a

, level of licensee performance that warranted an increased regulatory response.

In response to this indicator, we planned and implemented an inspection of the emergency preparedness area as part of the baseline inspection program. On June 29,1999, the resident inspectors observed portions of an emergency preparedness drill conducted by your staff. This observation was conducted as a reutine, quarterly, baseline inspection. We used inspection l Procedure 71114, Attachment 1, " Drill and Exercise Performance."

The primary focus of the inspection was to evaluate your staff's classification, notification and l protective action requirements, and developmental activities. The inspectors did not identify l any significant findings. Our activity was as documented in NRC Inspection Report 50-285/99-05.

As a result of your corrective actions, the July 14,1999, submittalindicated that the l Drill / Exercise Performance indicator had returned to the green band. The change indicated return to a level of performance where licensee response alone appropriately addresses l performance issues. Because our inspection identified no performance issues, we have determined that no additional NRC response is necessary.

In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the NRC's " Rules of Practice," a copy of this letter and its enclosure will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room (PDR).
