In the inspection-report for the previous' independent measurements-
,
11nspection (Report No.- 50-344/86-40),-two items are referenced (items no.
86-40-Ol'and 86-40-02) for future resolution. -These items have been addressed by the licensee and are discussed below.
,
~
LItem.No.:86-40-02 involved the radiochemical analysis of'a spiked
fsolution provided by the NRC.

The above table shows that the agreement is adequate. _ This test thus provides assurance that adequate accuracy is being maintained for the'
analysis-of beta' emitters _and other special nuclides such as Fe-55.
ItemNo.i86-40-O'1:involvedthemeasurementofliquidwastewhereinthe difference between the NRC and the. licensee results was large enough that the-validity of the calibration and/or the sampling procedure.needed to be reevaluated. -Subsequent tests indicated that the: calibration was not at fault as: demonstrated by the fact that the results for a homogeneous solution showed' good agreement'between a calibrated and the geometry in question.' geometry known to be, accurately.
'The investigation also revealed

that the mixing time of the samples obtained during the earlier.

contents.
The plant procedure calls for recirculating tank contents such that at least 2 tank volumes are turned over prior to sampling.
It is known_that.this takes: upwards of 2 hours2.314815e-5 days
5.555556e-4 hours
3.306878e-6 weeks
7.61e-7 months
to accomplish.

analysis could have caused the observe.d differences.
These tests proved-negative and thus it was concluded that the discrepancies were' the result of heterogeneous splits which in turn.resulted from' insufficient mixing.

N-13 decay, its only significant photon _ energy is the 511 Kev annihilation radiation _line.
However, this energy is not normally used to quantify activity because many _different nuclides can and do contribute to this line.
Contribution to the 511: Kev line from N-13 can be estimated by doing-a decay analysis _of this energy.
This was done and
_it was determined that in the sample _that was analyzed, about 70 percent
