No. 1 Fire Pump - Inoperable.

This report was initiated by Incident Report 81-393.

CONDITIONS PRIOR TO OCCURRENCE:

Mode 1 - Rx Power 96% - Unit Load 1030 MWe DESCRIPTION OF OCCURRENCE:

On September 30, 1981, during a routine test, it was discovered that the No. 1 Fire Pump fuel pump shaft had broken, rendering the Fire Pump inoperable.

At 1507 hours0.0174 days <br />0.419 hours <br />0.00249 weeks <br />5.734135e-4 months <br /> Action Statement 3.7.10.1.a was entered.

This occurrence constituted operation in a degraded mode in accordance with technical specification 6.9.1.9.b.

DESIGNATION OF APPARENT CAUSE OF OCCURRENCE:

The Fire Pump became inoperable due to a broken fuel pump shaft.

ANALYSIS OF OCCURRENCE:

Technical specification 3.7.10.1.a requires:

With one pump and/or one water supply inoperable, restore the inoperable equipment to operable status within 7 days or, in lieu of any other report required by specification-6.9.1,-prepare and submit a special report to the Commission pursuant to specification 6.9.2 within the next 30 days.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

The engine was disassembled, and the gears were inspected.

The fuel pump was removed.

The engine and pump were reconnected, and a new fuel pump installed.

At 1940 hours0.0225 days <br />0.539 hours <br />0.00321 weeks <br />7.3817e-4 months <br />, October 13, 1981 Action Statement 3.7.10.1.a was terminated.
