Duringheatup,thethermalgradients inthereactorvesselwallproducethermalstresseswhichvaryfromcompressive attheinnerwalltotensileattheouterwall.Thesethermalinducedcompressive stressestendtoalleviate thetensilestressesinducedbytheinternalpressure.

Therefore, apressure-temperature curvebasedonsteadystateconditions (i.e.,nothermalstresses) represents alowerboundofallsimilarcurvesforfiniteheatuprateswhentheinnerwallofthevesselistreatedasthegoverning location.

Theheatupanalysisalsocoversthedetermination ofpressure-temperature limitations forthecaseinwhichtheouterwallofthevesselbecomesthecontrolling location.

Thethermalgradients established duringheatupproducetensilestressesattheouterwallofthevessel.Thesestressesareadditivetothepressureinducedtensilestresseswhicharealreadypresent.Thethermalinducedstressesattheouterwallofthevesselaretensileandaredependent onboththerateofheatupandthetimealongtheheatupramp;therefore, alowerboundcurvesimilartothatdescribed fortheheatupoftheinnerwallcannotbedefined.Consequently, forthecasesinwhichtheouterwallofthevesselbecomesthestresscontrolling
