~W~FACTORYMUTUALRESEARCHCORPORATIONINTRODUCTIONTheplantwasvisitedonApril9,1987byW.F.ShieldandC.A.SpencerofFMRC.Wewereaccompanied'byMr.S.DavisofPAL.Fivedoorsandframeswereexaminedduringthisvisit.TheassemblieswerelocatedinUnit1and2ReactorBuildingsandtheControlBuilding.Mr.C.A.SpencerisaRegisteredProfessionalEngineerinfireprotectionwith17years'xperienceatFactoryMutual.Mr.Spencerhasbeeninvolvedinfieldandplanreviewevaluationoffirewallsandfireratedassembliesandisnowinvolvedintestingandevaluationoffireresistanceofbuildingmaterialsandfireratedassemblies.

FACTORYMUTUALRESEARCHCORPORATIONFIREDOORANDFRAMEEVALUATIONTwolabeledfiredoorsandframes,andthreeunlabeledfiredoorsandframes,wereexaminedduringthisvisittotheSusquehannaSteamElectricStationattherequestofthePennsylvaniaPowerandLightCompany(PPLu.).2.1FIREDOORFRAMESAll.framesexaminedwerefoundtobefabricatedinaccordancewiththeAmericanNationalStandardsInstitute,StandardA155.1,andmaybeexpectedtoprovide3hoursfireresistancesubJect'ocompletionofRecommendations1and2.2.2FIREDOORSTwolabeleddoorswithmodificationswereexaminedandthreeunlabeleddoorswerecomparedtolabeledfiredoorstoobta'inanestimatedfire-resistancerating.2.2.1LabeledFireDoorswithModificationsLabeleddoorswithmodificationswereexaminedtodeterminewhetherthedoorwouldstillbeexpectedtoprovidetheleveloffireresistanceindicatedonthelabel.Door115-gg999~.>.gdDoor115(Elevation779,ReactorBuilding,Unit2)hada1-1/2hourlabelattached.Thisdoorhadbeenmodifiedbyadditionofanelectromagneticcardreadingdevice.Examinationindicatesthisdoormaybeexpectedtoprovide1-1/2hoursfireresistance.(Note:ThereportoftheoriginalfiredoorevaluationdatedJanuary1985referencedaDoorNo.115onElevation670ofReactorBuilding,Unit1.Thisisnotthesamedoor.)Door175Door175(Elevation676,ControlStructure,LunchRoomC-109)hada1-1/2hourlabelattached.Thisdoorhadbeenmodifiedbyadditionofa10inx10inwiredglasslight(ModelT4GmanufacturedbyLeslieLockeInc,Atlanta,Georgia).Examinationindicatesthatsincethisiswithinthe tlFACTORYMUTUALRESEARCHCORPORATIONmaximumexposedglassareaallowedbyNationalFireProtectionAssociation,NFPA80,StandardforFireDoorsandWindows,thisdoormaybeexpectedtoprovide1-1/2hoursfireresistance.2.2.2UnlabeledFireDoorsUnlabeledfiredoorswereexaminedbycomparingtheirconstructionfeatureswithlabeleddoors.Door408Door408(Elevation719,ReactorBuilding,Unit2)hadnolabel.This'A~~-L-8~doorwascomparedtoDoor115'Miththe,followingresults:a.Bothdoorsarethesamesize.b.Bothdoorshaveverticalinternalstiffenersatapproximately6in.oncenter.c.Facesheetthickness(18ga'.)andhingereinforcement(16ga.)were-thesameonbothdoors.d.Bothdoorshavemineralwoolinsulationinthecavity.e.Door408hasalatchthrowof1/2in.comparedto5/8in.for9m~a-c-rt'TDoor115."However,thissatisfiestheminimumlatchthrowrequirementspecifiedinNFPA80fora1-1/2hourdoor.Basedontheaboveobservations,itisconcludedthatDoor408wouldhaveanexpectedratingof1-1/2hours.Door531Door531(Elevation749,ReactorBuilding,Unit1)hadnolabel.ThisQen4doorwascomparedwithDoor11541ththefollowingresults:a.Bothdoorshadthesamedimensions.b.c~d.e.Bothdoorshaveverticalinternalstiffenersatapproximately6in.oncenterasdeterminedusingastethoscope.Facesheetthickness(18ga.)andhingereinforcement(16ga.)werethesameonbothdoorsasdeterminedusingaspeciallyadaptedmicrometer.Bothdoorshavelatchthrowsof5/8in.Bothdoorshavemineralwoolinsulationinthecavity.

FACTORYMUTUALRESEARCHCORPORATIONItisconcludedthatDoorNo.531wouldhaveanexpectedratingof1-1/2hourssubjecttocompletionoftherecommendedimprovementsinSectionIIIofthisreport.Door712AnexaminationofDoor712(Elevation799,ReactorBuilding,Unit1)showedthattheactiveleafofthispairofdoorshadbeensprungatthetopedgeandshouldbereplaced.

FACTORY,MUTUALRESEARCHCORPORATIONIIIRECOMMENDATIONSThesilencersmissingfromtheframeofDoor531shouldbereplaced.TheopeningintheframeofDoor531whichwasintendedtoreceiveanelectromagneticswitchmechanismforacardreader,shouldbecoveredwitha16ga.coverplate.TheactiveleafofDoor712,whichhasbeensprungatthetop,shouldbereplacedwithalabeled1-1/2hourratedfiredoor.
