REACTORCOOLANTSYSTEMBASES3/4.4.9PRESSURE/TEMPERATURELIMITSAllcomponentsintheReactorCoolantSystemaredesignedtowithstandtheeffectsofcyclicloadsduetosystemtemperatureandpressurechanges.Thesecyclicloadsareintroducedbynormalloadtransients,reactortrips,andstartupandshutdownoperations.ThevariouscategoriesofloadcyclesusedfordesignpurposesareprovidedinSection5.2oftheFSAR.Ouringstartupandshutdown,theratesoftemperatureandpressurechangesarelimitedsothatthemaximumspecifiedheatupandcooldownratesareconsistentwiththedesignassumptionsandsatisfythestresslimitsforcyclicoperation.Duringheatup,thethermalgradientsinthereactorvesselwallproducethermalstresseswhichvaryfromcompressiveattheinnerwalltotensileattheouterwall.Thesethermalinducedcompressivestressestendtoalleviatethetensilestressesinducedbytheinternalpressure.Therefore,apressure-temperaturecurvebasedonsteadystateconditions(i.e.,nothermalstresses)representsalowerboundofallsimilarcurvesforfiniteheatuprateswhentheinnerwallofthevesselistreatedasthegoverninglocation.Theheatupanalysisalsocoversthedeterminationofpressure-temperaturelimitationsforthecaseinwhichtheouterwallofthevesselbecomesthecontrollinglocation.Thethermalgradientsestablishedduringheatupproducetensilestressesattheouterwallofthevessel.Thesestressesareadditivetothepressureinducedtensilestresseswhicharealreadypresent.Thethermalinducedstressesattheouterwallofthevesselaretensileandaredependentonboththerateofheatupandthetimealongtheheatupramp;therefore,alowerboundcurvesimilartothatdescribedfortheheatupoftheinnerwallcannotbedefined.Consequently,forthecasesinwhichtheouterwallofthevesselbecomesthestresscontrollinglocation,eachheatuprateofinterestmustbeanalyzedonanindividualbasis.TheheatupandcooldownlimitcurvesFiguresarecompositecurveswhichwerepreparedbydeterminingtemostconservasvecase,witheithertheinsideoroutsidewallcontrolling,foranyheatuporcooldownratesofupto100'Fperhour.Theheatupandcooldowncurveswerepreparedbaseduponthemostlimitingvalueofthepredictedadjustedreferencep0hig+he,Qpplicabl~/<au~~a~o~gFigures9,9-2.w~ghz.+-<z.ThereactorvesselmaterialshavebeentestedtodeterminetheirinitialRTNOTtheresultsofthesetestareshowninTableB3/4.4-1.,,Reactoropera-tionandresultantfastneutron(Egreaterthan1MeV)irradiationwillcauseanincreaseintheRT>OT.Therefore,anadjustedreferencetemperature,baseduponthefluenceandcoppercontentofthematerial'inquestion,canbepredictedusingFigur83/4.4-1andtherecommendationsofRegulatoryGuide1.99,Revisio,"EffectsofResidualElementsonPredictedRadiationOamagetoeactorVesselMaterials."TheheatupandcooldownlimitcurvesFiguresincludepredictedadjustmentsforthisshiftinRT>>attheendoftheapplicableserviceperiod,aswellasadjustmentsforpo45ibleerrorsinthepressureandtemperaturesensinginstruments.ST.LUCIE-UNIT2B3/44-8
