SUBJECT:

' ENVIRONMENTAL QUALIFICATION OF SAFETY-RELATED ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT AT-PILGRIM NUCLEAR POWER STATION By letter dated September 23, 1985, as~ supplemented on October 30, November 15 and November 26,-1985, the Boston Edison Company. requested that the Commission grant an extension from the November 30, 1985 deadline in 10 CFR 50.49(i) for environmental qualification of safety-related electrical equipment at the Pilgrim Station. The request specifically covered five

-types of electrical' equipment and sought an extegsion until February 8, l 1986. - Qualification testing had been completed oit all of these items

[ except one (control switches). The extension was to attow additional time

! to complete the testing and to assemble appropriate documentation, l including description of the test procedures, the actual test data, and i analyzes confirming that the items met the qualification requirements.

The licensee's reqr.est for extension was denied by the Commission in its

Memorandum and ONer dated November 27, 1985, based on its. finding that the licensea hao tailed to demonstrate the exceptional nature of its case.

On November 29, 1985, Mr. Edward Howard, Vice President of the Boston Edison Company, informed me and John Zwolinski that the control switches had been successfully tested and that a substantial effort was underway to L

complete the documentation _on all of the items by the November 30

! deadline. Mr. Richard Swanson of Boston Edison confirmed by telephone on p December 2, 1985 that this objective had been met.

An I&E Region I team inspection relative to EQ at Pilgrim Station is

' scheduled for December 9-13, 1985.
