Dear Senator Mikulski:

We have' watched with dismay as the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant at Lusby, MD has fallen in its performance ratings, and

~

has developed a number of potentially serious problems.

As you can see by our letter to Mr. McGowan, Chairman of the Baltimore Gas and Electric- Company, we are requesting at least three public meetings, jointly sponsored by BG&E and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), to provide more full information than

'has been carried by the media, and to allow a forum for public questions to be answered.

We invite your support and ask you to write both BG&E andYour the NRC, reinforcing _ our request for the public meetings.

cons, iderable influence will be very persuasive in helping the meetings to be arranged.

Thank you for your interes't and nupport.

Sincerely, L

Patricia Birnie, Co-Director .

George V. McGowan, Chairman j Baltimore Gas & Electric Co. I Charles Center, P.O. Box 1475 J Baltimore, MD 21203 J

Dear Mr. McGowan:

We have been following the reports of Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant and its recent series of problems. We believe that area residents would like to know.more about the status of- the

. reactors, and management's actions to restore safe conditions.

Therefore we request that you and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) provide at least three public meetings to inform us:of the present situation, and what is being, done to improve

1 conditions. Please provide a meeting in the Cambridge area, Calvert County, and Baltimore.as soon as possible.

We would appreciate your including the following subjects, but not to be restricted to only these subjects, and also providing adequate time for questions from the floor:

1. Reasons for NRC's recent poor ratings of Calvert Cliffs.
2. Changes being instituted to correct these problems, and when corrective measures will be completed.
3. Changes in management, with background reasons.

4.* The status of dry cask storage of irradiated fuel rods.

5. Timetable to complete the changes required by the NRC as a result of the TMI accident assessment.
6. Plans for decommissioning: financing, method, time table, etc.

Our group represents 35 orgariizations (peace, environmental, and civic) promoting safe energy, and educating the public about the unresolved problems of nuclear power and radioactive waste.

We thank you in advance for arranging the above requested public meetings, and providing answers to the above questions.

Sincerely, - -
