January 31, 1984 MFN-011-84 i Please be advised that GE is preparing to update and resubmit the reference January 31, 1984 draft supporting the Leak-Before-Break (LBB) approach to make it consistent with the requirements of the recently issued NUREG-1061. Volume 3. De original submittal was limited to  !

stainless steel piping. The first update will also be limited to stainless steel piping. A separate similar submittal will be made for .

qualifying carbon steel piping.  !

The schedule proposed below has been developed in conjunction with an I applicant for a BWR operating license, who intends to apply the LBB ,

approach if it is near-term cost-effective (i.e., if the schedule for technical and licensing efforts will support his near-tern plant i construction schedule). J

The stainless steel and carbon steel submittals will be comprised of two '

parts: (1) methodology suitable for all BWR and containment types; and  !

(2) application of the methodology to the GESSAR II design. The' methodology portions will be written suitable for reference by BWR owners or applicants who choose to apply the LBB approach.
