Background Information

  • The thermal loads are design basis loads in AP1000 licensing basis for seismic category I structures.
  • UFSAR Table 3H.5-1 specifies the design temperatures for thermal gradient in Nuclear Island.
  • Thermal load inconsistencies exist between licensing basis and design documents. A design change package proposed to modify Table 3H.5-1 to align the inconsistencies.

Approach to the licensing basis markups

  • UFSAR tables in Sections 3.8 and 3H show demands of critical sections.
  • During design certification, each table is determined what was included. Some of the tables include thermal loads in the demands, some of the tables exclude thermal loads from the demands through a thermal note.
  • The following tables include the thermal loads in the demands: 3.8.3-3, 3.8.3-4, 3.8.3-5, 3.8.3-6, 3.8.3-7, 3H.5-2, 3H.5-4, 3H.5-6 , 3H.5-8, 3H.5-9 Sheet 3, 3H.5-10, 3H.5-14, and 3H.5-15.
  • The following tables do not include the thermal loads as result of the thermal note: 3.8.5-3, 3H.5-3, 3H.5-5, 3H.5-7, 3H.5-9 Sheets 1-2c, 3H.5-11, 3H.5-12, and 3H.5-13.
  • Approach in the current licensing basis is maintained in LAR-132 markups.

Change No.1: Shield Building PCS Tank Normal Thermal Change Reason for the Change

  • There is an inconsistency of the normal thermal load for the PCS tank between UFSAR Subsection 3H.3.3 & Table 3H.5-1 and UFSAR Table 6.2.2-1 & Technical Specification.

- UFSAR Table 6.2.2-1 and COL Appendix A SR 3.6.6.1 define the minimum temperature in PCS tank is 40 °F.

- PCS recirculation heater keeps water in the PCS tank at minimum of 40 °F.

- UFSAR Subsection 3H.3.3 and Table 3H.5-1 show the water in PCS tank is 70 °F.

Proposed Changes:

  • Revise the normal thermal load for the PCS Tank in UFSAR Subsection 3H.3.3 and Table 3H.5-1 to be consistent with other sections in UFSAR and design documents. (+70 °)°F)
  • No involved changes to critical sections.
  • No impact on the PCS system.

Change No.1: Shield Building PCS Tank Normal Thermal Change

  • Revise the normal thermal inside PCS tank from +70°F to +40°F in UFSAR Subsection 3H.3.3 and Table 3H.5-1.

Change No.2: MSIV Room Accident Thermal Change Reason for the Change

  • There is an inconsistency of accident surface temperature for the MSIV compartment between UFSAR Table 3H.5-1 and updated calculations.

Proposed Changes:

  • Revise the accident air temperature for the MSIV compartment in UFSAR Table 3H.5-1 to be consistent with UFSAR Figure 3D.5-9. (+132 °)°F)
  • Revise the accident surface temperature for the MSIV compartment in UFSAR Table 3H.5-1 to reflect the updated calculations. (+132 °)°F)
  • No involved changes to critical sections.
  • No impact on Equipment Qualification because no change to Figure 3D.5-9.
  • No impact on MSIV compartment pressurization.
  • No impact on structural design because existing structures have sufficient margin to accommodate this thermal loading.

Change No.2: MSIV Room Accident Thermal Change

  • Revise the accident air temperature of MSIV room from +132°F to

+485°F and accident surface temperature from +132°F to +222°F in UFSAR Table 3H.5-1.

Change No.3: Auxiliary Building Exterior Walls below Grade and Basemat Accident Thermal Change Reason for the Change

  • Table 3D.5-4 defines the abnormal environments as a function of equipment location outside containment.
  • There is an inconsistency of accident thermal loads for the exterior walls below grade and basemat in auxiliary building between UFSAR Table 3H.5-1 and UFSAR Table 3D.5-4.

Proposed Changes:

  • Revise the accident thermal loads for the exterior walls below grade and basemat in auxiliary building in UFSAR Table 3H.5-1 to be consistent with UFSAR Table 3D.5- 15°F Outside/ +140 °F Inside)
  • Involved changes in Wall 1 Table 3H.5-2 (updating the governing load combination)
  • No impact on Equipment Qualification because no change to Table 3D.5-4.
  • No impact on structural design because existing structures have sufficient margin to accommodate the thermal loading.
