/ This morning around 0700 hours0.0081 days <br />0.194 hours <br />0.00116 weeks <br />2.6635e-4 months <br />, John Reynoso, NRC Inspector, met me at the 30' stairwell and wanted to know the status of 2B008 battery bank. I took him to 2B008 battery room and showed him the qualified spare jar in place where old pilot cell #13 used to be. The spare jar was renumbered M cells 13/14. Old cells 13/14 were renumbered 17/18 and presently stored on the lower tier where the spare jar used be.

1. 13 is still on v-- John wanted to know why the jar containing degraded cell the rack and not shipped to the manufacturer for Failure Analysis. ??

I 1 explained that old cells 13/14 were kept on float charge by the single cell rail charger and will be shipped after we install a qualified spare jar with 2 good cells. I took John to the 2B010 battery room (next

. ' door) where a total of 4 extra unqualified 1800 AH batteries are stored C 0 in a mini rack. Because of easy access, spare cells 1/2 should be tested to a Modified Performance test by a single cell tester and E

Srecharge. Then this newly qualified spare jar will be installed in 28008 battery room for future use.

life and now requires an annual Performance test. I told him that in May/June 2010, 2B007 battery will be replaced with 2/3B00X battery.

Prior to 2B007 replacement, 2/3B00X battery will undergo a Modified Performance test in its own rack.

He was referring to NN 1(b)(7)(C)T that addressed 2B00? battery annual performance test after reaching 85t service life. He wanted to know if an annual performance test has been performed on 2B007 battery lately. My response was, "No".

John wanted to know when 2/3B00X battery Modified Performance test be conducted. i replied - in April/May 2010. John is also interested in monitoring the work when 2/3BOOX battery is dismantled from its rack and then when it is installed on 2B007 two tier rack.

/ This Notification should be peer reviewed byl and take appropriate actions to qualify a spare battery jar for 2B008 battery bank. He should also contact the battery manufacturer, EnerSys, and make arrangement for a Root Cause Failure Analysis to be performed by the vendor on 2B009 battery pilot cell #13. We should establish from the vendor if the rest of battery batch is affected by this failure, since 2n008 battery was manufactured in May 2009.

Required Action:

This Notification should be peer reviewed by Maintenance Engineering and take appropriate actions to qualify a spare battery jar for 2B008 battery bank. He should also contact the battery manufacturer, EnerSys, and make arrangement for a Root Cause Failure Analysis to be performed by the vendor on 2B008 battery pilot cell #13. We should establish from the vendor if the rest of battery batch is affected by this failure, since 2B008 battery was manufactured in May 2009.

Electrical Maintenance Engineering Peer check the notification and found it to be correct and accurate. Engineering contacted the vendor Enersys for an evaluation of cell #13, warranty replacement, and extent of condition for the remaining cells in 23008 battery bank. The follow-up activities will be track in the auarterly Battery Health Report.
