Meteorological Instrumentation 16.7.3 BASES The FUNCTIONALITY of the meteorological instrumentation ensures that sufficient meteorological data are available for estimating potential radiation doses to the public as a result of routine or accidental release of radioactive materials to the atmosphere. This capability is required to evaluate the need for protective measures to protect the health and safety of the public and is consistent with the recommendations of Regulatory Guide 1.23, "Onsite Meteorological Programs," February 1972.

TESTING REQUIREMENTS CHANNEL CHECK The daily channel check consists of a qualitative assessment, by observation, of each instrument channel's behavior based upon knowledge of current and previous weather conditions. Each channel is verified to have power, indicating on scale, and updating normally.

CHANNEL VERIFICATION The weekly channel verification combines a more extensive channel check with limited calibration checks and parameter adjustments as necessary. Visual inspections, from the ground, of the wind speed cups and directional vanes are also performed.

CHANNEL CALIBRATION The semi-annual channel calibration encompasses the entire channel from the sensors to the data recorders. Each sensor is lowered from the tower, inspected, and replaced if necessary. A full calibration on each processor and data recorder is performed and replaced if necessary.
