1PACTORYMUTUALRESEARCHCORPORATION Intheexamination, firedoorassemblies withmodifications hadoneormoreofthefollowing additions oralterations:
1.Switchesorelectromagnets attachedtotheheaderofthedoorframe.Wiringisinrigidmetalconduitfromthecardreadertothefaceofthedoorframe.2.Steeloraluminumanglestrips2in.to4in.wide,1/8in.thick,and4in.to6in.longattachedtothetopofthedoorbymachinescrews.Theanglestripsactinconcertwiththeswitchorelectromagnet.
3.Weatherstripping usedtominimizeairleakagearounddoorswhereapressuredifferential existsbetweenadjoining areas.Weatherstripping wasattachedtothedoorordoorframebymeansofmachinescrews.Thelabeledfiredoorsexaminedareidentified inAppendixA.AlsoincludedinthisAppendixarecomaentsonadditions/modifications todoorsandframes.A1-1/2hrlabeledaccesspanelNo.7006islocatedintheControlBuildingatelevation 754.The'panel is3ftby3ftandisequippedwithamicroswitch ontheframe.Modifications madetolabeledfiredoorsandframesandtheaccesspanelarenotexpectedtoaffectthefireresistance ratingoftheseassemblies.
2.1.3FireDoorsNotLabeledDoorNo.111(elevation 670,ReactorBldg.Unit1)andDoorNo.201(elevation 683,ReactorBldg.Unit1)hadnolabels.ThesedoorswerecomparedwithDoorNo.110(elevation 670,ReactorBldg,Unit2)whichhadal-l/2hrlabelwiththefollowing results:2.Allthreehadthesamedimensions (height,widthandthickness) andthesameidentification tags(exceptfortheopeningnumber)rivetedtothelatchedgeofthedoor.Thespacingofinternalhorizontal stiffeners wasdetermined tobeapproximately 8to12in.oncenteronallthreedoors.Thiswasdonebymeansofastethoscope.
FACTORYMUTUALRESEARCHCORPORATION 3.Thesametypeofinsulation wasusedinthecoreofallthreedoors(glassfiberbatts).Thiswasestablished byremovingscrewsfromdoorhingesonalldoorsandextracting doorfillermaterial.
4.Thethickness ofthemetalfacesheetonalldoorswasthesame(0.045in.or18ga).Thiswasdetermined bymeasuring metalthickness bymeansofaspecially adaptedmicrometer.
DoorNo.115(elevation 670ofReactorBldg.Unit1)alsohadnolabel.Thisdoorwasapparently designedasabulletproofdoorwithhingesweldedinplace.Itcouldnotbeinternally examinedinthemannerdescribed above.Thedoorwasmanufactured bytheChicagoBulletProofDoorCompany.OtherdoorsmadebythesamecompanywerelocatedintheControlBuilding(Door462atelevation 729)andintheReactorBuilding(Door571atelevation 818).Boththeabovedoorshavel-l/2hrlabels.Allthreedoorshave1)thesamedimensions, 2)thesamehardware, 3)asolidcore.Basedonthewriter'experience auditingfiredoormanufacturing plantsitisbelievedthatDoorNo.115wouldalsohaveal-l/2hrfirerating.However,sincethedoorcouldnotbeinternally
- examined, themanufacturer wouldhavetobecontacted andaskedtocomparetheconstruction ofthisdoorwiththe1-1/2hrfirerateddoorstoconfirmtheaboVe.Door587hadalooselyattachedlabel.Thisdoorwouldnormallybetreatedasifithadnolabel.Thedoorwasnotphysically examinedasabovebecauseitwaslocatedinashortcorridorwithalabeledfiredooroneitherside(Door586andastairwaydoor).2.2SPECIALPURPOSEDOORAnevaluation wasmadeofanunlabeled special-purpose (flood)doortodetermine whetheritwouldprovidea1-1/2hrfireresistance rating.Thedoorexaminedwasatelevation 645intheCoreSprayPumpRoomofUnit1~Thisareaisindicated asArea1-1Binthe"FireProtection ReviewReport".Thedoorwas3ftby7ftandconsisted of1/4in.platesteelwith1in.x2in.x3/16in.steelchannelforperipheral framingandhorirontal stiffening 10in.oncenter.Thedoorwaslatchedbytwelve1in.square,steelbarlatchesengagingthe5/8in.thicksteelframeonthetop,bottomandsides.Gasketing isemployedtomakeawaterproof sealwiththe5/8in.thicksteelframe.Steeldoorsofthistypehavenotbeentestedforfireresistance inthiscountry.Theconstruction ofthisdoorwascomparedtotheRulesoftheFireOfficesCommittee (FOC),Section1,Specification 1,fromGreatBritain,
1]1FACTORYMUTUALRESEARCHCORPORATION whichstatesthatdoorsfabricated inaccordance withthoserulesmaybeexpectedtoprovide6hrs'ireresistance whenthereisonedooroneachsideoftheopening.Thisisbasedonnumeroussuccessful firetestsofthesedoorsinthatconfiguration.
Firetestsonsingledoorsofthisdesign,conducted torequirements ofBritishStandard476,Part8,havesatisfied requirements ofthatstandardfor'hours.Thistestmethodisequivalent tothetestprocedure usedintheU.S.,ASTME-152,indetermining adoor'sfireresistance rating,withoneexception:
ahosestreamtestisnotrequiredinBS476.Thisexception isnotconsidered criticalforsteeldoorssincethehosestreamisappliedtothehingesideofthedoorwhichdrivesthedooragainsttheframestop.RulesoftheFOCrequiretwopointlatchesofnolessthan3/8in.diametersteelinsuchdoors.Thewaterproof doorinquestionhastwelve1in.squaresteellatchbarswhichengagetheframe;hence,thedesiredl-l/2hrfireresistant performance canreasonably beexpectedinafiresituation.
2.3ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT CHASESAnevaluation wasmade.ofdoorstochasescontaining electrical equipment atelevation 771intheControlBuilding.
Thesedoorswerenumbered594,595,598,andoneunnumbered.
Thedoorsarefittedwithafusiblelink-1Iactuatedlouver(llin.xllin.)locatedinthetopthirdofthedoor.Thedoorsandlouversborel-l/2hrULlabels~FMdoesnotapprovelabeledfiredoorswithlouvers.However,ULtestsandlistslouversforinstallation inlabeledfiredoors.TheNationalFireProtection Association (NFPA)allowstheuseoflouversinlabeledfiredoorswheretheopeningisnotinanexitorlocatedwhereproductsofcombustion flowingthroughthelouveropeningpriortoitsoperation couldjeopardize theuseofexits.Thewallconstruction ofthecablechasesconsistsoftwo1in.thicklayersofTypeXgypsumwallboard onsteelstuds.Thewallboard isonthecorridorsideonlywithnosheathing providedonthechasesideofthestuds.Thisisnotatestedfireratedconstruction.
TomeetFMrecommendations louversshouldberelocated tothefaceofthecablechaseneartheceilingtoachievefastresponse.
Louveropeningsinthedoorshouldbeclosedwith16gagesheetmetalwithaminimum2in.overlaparoundtheopening.Thesheetmetalcoveringshouldbeattachedwithmachinescrews5in.oncenter.
