Marine Turtle Removal Monthly Summary December 2012
==Dear Meghan,==
Attached, please find the monthly summary of marine turtle removals for December 2012. This month, we captured twenty-eight (28) Caretta caretta and thirty-four (34) Chelonia mydas in the intake canal of the St.
Lucie power plant on Hutchinson Island. There was one sea turtle mortality in the month of December; no sea turtles were sent for rehabilitation.
On December 9th, a juvenile green turtle was found dead on the temporary 5-inch barrier net in the morning.
This turtle had a good body condition and no salient wounds or abnormalities. The turtle appeared to have drowned during entrainment. The preliminary determination by Inwater Research Group (IRG) biologists, after consultation with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, was that this incident was causal to power plant operations (pending necropsy). The animal was then placed on ice and transported by IRG staff to Nancy Mettee, DVM for necropsy. The gross necropsy findings were consistent with forced submergence as the likely cause of death. Consequently, this incident remained causal to power plant operations.
Throughout the month, the 5-inch barrier net experienced light loads of algae and jellyfish that entered into the intake canal system. Underwater Engineering Services completed post-outage maintenance and cleaning of the 5-inch and 8-inch barrier nets during the first week of December. Overall, the temporary barrier net has performed as designed and no turtles have been observed beyond the 5-inch net. To date, Florida Power &
Light continues to work towards the installation of a permanent 5-inch barrier net.
The tag numbers and morphometric data for all turtles captured during the month have been included (see attachments/addendums). Also included is a spreadsheet for all captures, mortalities, injuries, and causal events delineated by species and by month for the year 2012. In addition, this spreadsheet also tracks fresh scrapes incurred on captured turtles for the current month, as well as the entire year.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
Sincerely, 1

Marine Turtle Removal Monthly Summary December 2012

Dear Meghan,
