Dear Meghan,

Attached, please find the monthly summary of marine turtle removals for May 2014. This month, we captured thirty-one (31) Caretta caretta and nine (9) Chelonia mydas in the intake canal of the St. Lucie power plant on Hutchinson Island. There were no mortalities or sea turtles sent for rehabilitation in May.

Throughout the month, the 5-inch barrier net experienced light loads of algae that entered into the intake canal system, whereas jellyfish entrainment was moderate. On May 1st, bathymetric surveys of the intake canal were performed between the intake canal headwall and the 8-inch A-1-A barrier net. On May 24th, a small hole was discovered just below the surface of the 5-inch barrier net and was promptly repaired. Daily inspections of the intake canal up to the Underwater Intrusion Detection System, or 10-inch U.I.D.S. net, have not revealed any turtles beyond the 5-inch net. Construction of a permanent 5-inch barrier net is currently underway and completion has been projected for mid-to-late 2014.

The tag numbers and morphometric data for all turtles captured during the month have been included with this report (see attachments/addendums). Also included is a spreadsheet for all captures, mortalities, injuries, and causal events delineated by species and by month for the year 2014. In addition, this spreadsheet also tracks fresh scrapes incurred on captured turtles for the current month, as well as the entire year. An additional Excel spreadsheet tracks all causal injuries and mortalities incurred by sea turtles at the St. Lucie Plant since 2002.

NOTES

1. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 10/12/11, 4/29/12, 7/7/12, 10/20/12, 2/23/13, 7/10/13, 1/21/14, 3/7/14 and 5/4/14. PAPILLOMAS (Balazs Tumor Score = 2 {moderate}, Total Tumor Score = 15).

2. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 4/27/06 and 5/6/14.

3. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 3/1/04, 11/3/04, 11/21/04, 7/8/05, 8/12/05, 9/13/05, 4/24/06, 9/29/06, 11/19/06, 12/4/06, 12/9/07, 2/10/08, 4/3/08, 9/14/08, 11/26/08, 12/18/08, 12/14/09, 1/11/10, 9/21/10, 7/25/11, 10/13/11, 7/12/12, 12/16/12, 8/19/13, 2/12/14 and 5/7/14. Turtle missing portions of both rear flippers (healed).

4. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 10/29/08, 1/17/14 and 5/7/14.

5. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 8/5/08, 5/10/11, 6/13/11, 7/25/11, 7/7/12, 2/5/13, 3/20/13 and 5/7/14. PAPILLOMAS (Balazs Tumor Score = 2 {moderate}, Total Tumor Score = 18). Paps seem to be regressing near shoulder. Moderate fresh scrapes under left eye.

6. Adult female. Tail length = 190 mm.

7. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 1/13/12, 9/12/12, 4/21/13,10/15/13 and 5/21/14.

8. Adult female. Tail length = 194 mm.

9. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 3/19/08, 6/28/13 and 5/25/14. Old healed hooking wound in right front axilla.

10. Adult female. Tail length = 230 mm. Healing hooking wound in right front axilla. Mating scar in ventral surface of neck.

11. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 4/11/04, 9/13/05, 4/26/06, 7/16/06, 12/3/07, 2/1/08, 4/23/08, 9/2/08, 10/15/08, 11/12/08, 6/9/11,12/12/12 and 5/25/14.

12. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 12/21/05, 3/28/09, 5/3/12 and 5/27/14. Moderate fresh scrape in left anterior carapace (bone exposed).

13. Adult female. Tail length = 150 mm. Partially healed wound in lower tomium, possibly a hooking wound.
