Radiological Surveys Of License TR-2 Facilities, Docket 50-22 Gentlemen:

The Westinghouse Test Reactor (TR-2) license authorizes Westinghouse Electric Corporation to possess but not to operate the test reactor. In ,

compliance with TR-2 license conditions, Westinghouse has been conducting ,

annual radiological surveys and safety / fire inspections of the. reactor  :

containment building and associated facilities. The last report was submitted on December 21,'1992.

Westinghouse is-preparing to complete a decommissioning and decontamination _(D&D) plan for the TR-2 license facilities. - In order to implement these radiological and engineering surveys,. Westinghouse is planning to conduct radiological characterization- surveys _ of = the retired _

i TR-2 facilities. This characterization work will be more extensive-than the annual radiological surveys previously conducted for license- .

compliance and may' involve taking samples of the canal walls, reactor- ]

bioshield and steel shell, surfaces of floors and tunnels, piping,: etc. as - "

well' as-inserting radiation measurement probes into.the' reactor vessel through existing ports. All work will be performed accoroing to. approved- .

written procedures and under the cognizance'and surveillance of sitel N radiological personnel.

These' surveys will not involve changes _to any of the existing conditions of' the TR-2 license- and will: not involve any unreviewed safety; issues,:
