Fermi 2 Nuclear Plant Notification of an Unusual Event Newport, MI 48166 Alert Site Area Emergency License No: 50-241- General Emergency p gg XX Not Applicable

Subject:

DAMAGE TO DIESEL GENERATOR DURING TESTING (SECOND UPDATE)

In an inspection of Emergency Diesel Generator 11, the licensee has identified signs of d: gradation (metal pickup) on six upper crankshaft bearings. The inspection was requested by Region III (Chicago) and the Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation to determine the condition of the diesel generator, which had been rebuilt in February 1985 including replacement of the upper crankshaft and bearings. Repairs are continuing for Diesel Generators 13 and 14 (Reference PN0-III-85-95 and 95A). Plans for inspecting the fourth unit, Diesel Generator 12, have not been made at this time.

The licensee is evaluating the new Diesel Generator 11 findings and the implication of the findings on the other diesel generators. Diesel Generator 11 has had fewer than 25 starts with normal prelubrication. There may have been one " fast start" without normal prelubrication. (The damage to Diesel Generators 11 and 12 in January 1985 was attributed to inadequate prelubrication of the upper crankshaft bearings.)

R:gion III and the Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation personnel are on-site reviewing the diesel generator problems.

Tha State of Michigan will be notified.

Region III received this updated information from the Resident Inspector at 7:30 a.m.,

(CST), December 4,1985.
