PRELINIMARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-III-87-12 Date January 26, 1987 DMb This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information is as initially received without v;rification or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by the Region III staff on this date.

Fermi 2 Notification of an Unusual Event Newport, MI 48166 Alert Site Area Emergency Docket No. 50-341 General Emergency X Not Applicable Subjtet: SCNIOR REACTOR OPERATOR SUSPENDED On January 23, 1987, the licensee informed Region III (Chicago) that an NRC-licensed Nuclear Supervising Operator had been suspended on January 22, 1987, as a result of a positive test r:sult in a random drug screening conducted on January 15, 1987. The operator's site access has also been suspended. Both an initial test and a confirming test of the sample showed positive findings -- indicative of more than a passive inhalation of THC, the active ingredient in marijuana. The test results were received by the licensee on January 22, 1987.

Th2 licensee conducted an imediate review of the operator's work assignments over the previous two weeks. He had performed instrument panel walkdowns while the plant was in cold shutdown. There was no evidence of error in his performance.

The individual was interviewed before being suspended and provided no conclusive information about possible drug use. In a previous random drug screening in October 1986, the test rGsults for this individual were negative.

The licensee's actions are in full compliance with its Fitness for Duty Program.

The State of Michigan will be informed of this information.
