SUBJECT:

SHUTDOWN EXCEEDING 48-HOURS On February 27, 1991, at approximately 4:19 p.m., Unit I commenced a shutdown from 100%

power to investigate the cause of an electrical ground which had developed on the main generator exciter. At 8:31 p.m., with the unit at 68% reactor power, the turbine was manually tripped after a cooling water leak was discovered in the exciter cabinet. By 9:00 p.m. reactor power had runback to approximately 20% and the unit had been stabili7ed. The unit entered Mode 3 at 10:26 p.m. and will remain at this mode pending completion of an investigation to determine the cause of the leaking exciter cooling water system.

Presently the unit is scheduled to be down until at least March 4, 1991.

The NRC resident inspector was notified. State and local authorities were not notified.
