SUBJECT:

SECURITY GUARD CLAIMS TO HAVE BEEN ASSAULTED ON- 9 TE The-licensee advised Regior II on February 15 that a security guard claimed'to have been  :

struck in the back of the head while standing in a rest room within the plant's Protected Area. The assault reportedly took place at. approximately 2:00 a.m.,' February 15. The guard was treated and relcased by a local hospital.

The licensee has initiated an investigation into the matter and the York' County Sheriff's Department has been informed.

Thel guard had been on sick leave'since mid-January and had returned to duty on February 13, 1939. .The guard was involved in a secur'ty everit 'on January IL 1989 concerning his inattentiveness on post. The individual claimed his' inattentiveness was a due te illness.

Thsre is local media interest. A brief item appeared in the York County supplement to the Charlotte Observer tnis morni~g.n

The NRC received initial notification of this event by telecon from the licensee at i 1:30 p.m. (EDT) on February 15, 1989.
