The information is as initially received without verifi-cation or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

SUBJECT:

MEDIA INTEREST IN RADIOGRAPHY EVENT The licensee reported to Region II that at 7:15 a.m. (EDT), on June 18, a radiography crew experienced a disconnection of a radioactive source while the source was outside its shield. The licensee reports that no overexposures occurred and that the source was safely returned to its shield.

Catawba is under construction and is not yet required to have a radiological emergency plan in place. Duke Power Company holds a license from the State of South Carolina authorizing the company to perform industrial radiography at temporary locations throughout the state. The company notified the state of the event at 3:00 p.m. (EDT) on June 18.

A shift change, involving about 400 workers, was held up for four hours while the source was being secured.

Media interest occurred. The licensee responded to media inquiries. The NRC does not plan to issue a news release.

The State of South Carolina is investigating the event.

Region II (Atlanta) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the I licensee at 12 noon (EDT) on June 21.
