Marine Turtle Removal Monthly Summary August 2021
Dear Meghan,
Attached, please find the monthly summary of marine turtle removals for August 2021. This month we captured 13 Caretta caretta and three Chelonia mydas in the intake canal of the St. Lucie power plant on Hutchinson Island. There were no mortalities or sea turtles sent for rehabilitation this month.
The primary 5-inch barrier net encountered light-to-moderate amounts of algae this past month.
Underwater Engineering Services, Inc. inspected the primary barrier net and removed accumulated algae and debris as needed. Altogether, the primary barrier net has performed as designed and no turtles have been observed beyond the 5inch net.
The tag numbers and morphometric data for all turtles captured during the month have been included with this report (see attachments/addendums). Also included is a spreadsheet for all captures, mortalities, injuries, and causal events delineated by species and by month for 2021. In addition, this spreadsheet tracks fresh scrapes incurred on captured turtles for the current month, as well as the entire year.

NOTES
- 1. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 7/25/21.
- 2. Adult female loggerhead. Tail length = 175 mm. Turtle missing 40% from terminal end of RFF (healed). Notch in terminal end of RFF.
- 3. Adult female loggerhead. Tail length = 205 mm.
- 4. Adult female loggerhead. Tail length = 224 mm. Small healed notch in distal trailing edge of RFF. Shark rakings in right anterior plastron and right axilla.
- 5. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released on Hutchinson Island on 8/23/19, 12/15/19, 1/19/20, 7/24/20, 3/3/21, 6/8/21. Large healed notch in left posterior carapace. Turtle missing 10% from terminal ends of both rear flippers (flipper damage is healed).
- 6. Adult female loggerhead. Tail length = 235 mm. Healed notches in distal trailing edges of both front flippers.
- 7. Adult female loggerhead. Tail length = 255 mm. Turtle slightly underweight (plastron slightly concave, normal for end of the nesting season). Missing 40% from terminal end of LFF (healed).
- 8. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged, and released at Hutchinson Island on 1/10/18, 3/14/18, 9/5/19, 12/15/20, 4/5/21. Small healed notch in marginals of left posterior carapace.
- 9. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged, and released at Hutchinson Island on 11/12/20.
