Marine Turtle Removal Monthly Summary September 2020

Dear Meghan,

Attached, please find the monthly summary of marine turtle removals for September 2020. This month we captured 14 Caretta caretta and 20 Chelonia mydas in the intake canal of the St. Lucie power plant on Hutchinson Island. Five turtles were sent for rehabilitation (4 non-causal and 1 causal) and there was one non-causal mortality during the month of September. As with all sea turtle strandings at the Saint Lucie Plant, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) was consulted and a stranding form was filed with the state through the Sea Turtle Stranding and Salvage Network.

Four turtles were sent to rehabilitation facilities for non-causal injuries this month. On September 1st, a juvenile green turtle was recovered with extensive, but healed, damage to the left side of its face. The top left quadrant of the jaw was missing and the nasopharyngeal cavity was partially exposed. The turtle was otherwise healthy and active with a good body condition. After consultation with FWC, the turtle was transported to rehab as a precautionary measure. After a thorough health assessment by the staff veterinarian at the Loggerhead Marinelife Center (LMC), the turtle was cleared for release. The injury was likely due to a vessel strike (prop wound). On September 22nd, an emaciated and lethargic adult male loggerhead was taken to LMC for rehab. On September 23rd, an emaciated and lethargic subadult loggerhead with old boat strike injuries was also taken to LMC for rehab. This turtle was baring strange tags applied by the Brevard Zoo when it was released from rehab on August 1st of last year.

On September 26th, another subadult loggerhead was recovered with a boat strike injury to its carapace. The injury consisted of two deep prop wounds and a portion of the posterior carapace was missing. This forth turtle was taken to the Gumbo Limbo Nature

Center in Boca Raton for rehab. Because these injuries were unrelated to power plant activity they were classified as non-causal.

One turtle was taken to a rehabilitation facility for a causal injury this month. On September 5th, a juvenile green turtle was recovered with a severe fresh scrape. The anterior carapace was punctured, exposing the lungs. The injury was sustained in part due to embedded barnacles in this area of the carapace. Inwater Research Group (IRG) biologists transported this turtle to LMC for rehab. According to the veterinarian, the turtles prognosis is good and the animal is expected to make a full recovery.

There was one non-causal mortality this month. On September 22nd, an emaciated juvenile green turtle with severe papillomatosis was found floating at the surface of the primary barrier net. It had serious body wasting and severe muscle atrophy (deeply sunken plastron). The turtle was moderately decomposed (rigor mortis and foul smelling) and presumed to have been entrained postmortem.

The primary 5-inch barrier net encountered severe amounts of algae in September. In response, Underwater Engineering Services, Inc. (UESI) inspected the primary barrier net and removed accumulated algae and debris as needed. Furthermore, IRG biologists performed around-the-clock monitoring of the intake canal and barrier net system either as warranted by sufficiently high debris intrusion levels or whenever directed by FPL oversight personnel. Moreover, the primary barrier net has performed as designed and no turtles have been observed beyond the 5inch net.

The tag numbers and morphometric data for all turtles captured during the month have been included with this report (see attachments/addendums). Also included is a spreadsheet for all captures, mortalities, injuries, and causal events delineated by species and by month for 2020. In addition, this spreadsheet tracks fresh scrapes incurred on captured turtles for the current month, as well as the entire year.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Sincerely, Steve Steve Weege Sr. Environmental Specialist Inwater Research Group, Inc.

PAPILLOMAS (Balazs Tumor Score = 1 {light}, Total Tumor Score = 3).

5. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 8/27/18, 8/28/20, 9/20/20.
6. REHAB (NON-CAUSAL). Stranding# JRG200922-01. Emaciated and lethargic adult male loggerhead removed from atop the 5-inch barrier net. Debilitated Loggerhead Turtle Syndrome - IRG biologists transported the turtle to LMC for rehab.
7. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 4/19/18, 5/24/18, 11/5/18, 3/1/20, 7/27/20, 9/22/20.
8. DEAD (NON-CAUSAL MORTALITY). Stranding# STW200922-01. PAPILLOMAS (Balazs Tumor Score =

3 {heavy}, Total Tumor Score = 51). Emaciated juvenile green turtle recovered from atop the primary 5-inch barrier net with severe papillomatosis. Serious body wasting and severe muscle atrophy (deeply sunken plastron). Turtle was moderately decomposed (rigor mortis and foul smelling) and presumed to have been entrained postmortem.

9. REHAB (NON-CAUSAL). Stranding #CRM200923-01. STRANGE TAG (PIT & Inconel tags applied by Brevard Zoo when released from rehab on 8/1/19). Emaciated and lethargic subadult loggerhead recovered from atop the 5-inch barrier net. It had three old prop scars across its carapace and a healed laceration in the right front flipper. Heavy epibiont load. Turtle taken to LMC for rehab.
10. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 1/7/20 and 9/25/20.
11. REHAB (NON-CAUSAL). Stranding# CRM200926-01. Subadult loggerhead retrieved from the tangle nets with boat strike injury to posterior carapace. The injury consisted of two deep prop wounds and a portion of the posterior carapace missing with dead bone exposed.
