973-3446 AEC AUTHORIZES OPERATION OF QUAD-CITIES NUCLEAR POWER STATION NEAR CORDOVA, ILLINOIS AT 20 PER CENT OF FULL POWER Licenses authorizing temporary operation of Units 1 and 2 of the Quad-Cities Nuclear Power Station near Cordova.

1111nois, at 20 per cent of rated power have been issued to Commonwealth Edison Company and Iowa-Illinois Gas and Elec-tric Company by the Atomic Energy Commission.

At 20 per cent of power, each unit would operate at a thermal power level of 50 2 raegawa tts, resulting in the generation of about 120,000 net electrical kilowatts from each unit.

The AEC's action follows dismissal of a court suit under which the Commission was enjoined from issuing interim licenses for the plants on the basis of special review procedures con-tained in the AEC's regulations.

The suit was filed in U. S.

District Court in Washington.

D.

C., by the Attorney General l

l of Illinois and the Izaak Walton League.

An agreement among the plaintiffs and the license applicants that a closed-cycle i

cooling system would be installed at the station over a period of time resulted in plaintiffs' dismissal of the suit.

The Commission's regulations implementing NEPA provide for authorization of temporary, limited operation -for testing purposes and to meet urgent power needs--following a special environmental review tailored to the limited operation sought.

Under these provisions, the AEC issued a fuel;3%.

A draft detailed statement on-environmental considera-tions relating to operation of the two units at full power was issued for public comment on March 6.

closed-cycle cooling system.

The Quad-Cities station is located in Rock Island County l

on the east bank of the Mississippi River about three miles i

north of Cordova, Illinois.

Each unit uses a boiling water reactor and each will produce-about 809.000 net electrical kilowatts when operating at full power.
